There is something behind us

This piece requires a second look before the title makes sense. In first glance, it appears to be a man rappelling into a cave to an ancient dais or floor remnant while in one wall of the cave molten lava pours out of lava tubes in fiery display. On the left is an unexplained shadow that we see. It isn't until we step back again that we realize the lava forms eyes and tentacles in the rock, while the shadowed form seems to be death. Many layers here for just one painting, so high marks on vision, impact and originality.

The painting looks very good to be some short. A lot of thought went into this piece, it strikes me, and very good execution of the work. What needs to be sharp and in focus is, while the stuff he wants us to guess on is shadowy and indistinct. It's a good technique for ensuring a second look at the painting, thus the high marks for Technique.

All in all, an excellent addition to a distinguished gallery. Well done!
